THE PRACTICE FIELD GUIDE
Improve typing speed
and accuracy.
Start with accuracy
A typing test is useful when it helps you notice a habit. Choose a short session, keep your shoulders relaxed, and aim to finish words evenly. If a key repeatedly causes trouble, slow down at that point rather than racing through the rest of the passage. Compare sessions of the same duration and mode.
What WPM measures
Typeloria divides the correct characters remaining in your input by five, then divides by elapsed minutes. Ten correct characters over six seconds equal 20 WPM. Backspacing and retyping cannot inflate retained-character speed. Accuracy counts every attempted character, so correcting a mistake improves the text without erasing that attempt from accuracy.
Learn the keyboard in layers
Begin with the home row and use the raised F and J marks to return your hands without looking down. Reach for nearby keys with the recommended finger, return home, and add spaces with a thumb. Short deliberate lessons are more useful than a long session spent rehearsing tension. The Academy introduces rows, words, capitalization, numbers and punctuation in sequence.
Practice for students
Work with meaningful sentences and stories after the basic movements feel familiar. Reading a few characters ahead helps the hands continue while the eyes prepare the next word. Try five minutes of focused practice, then take a break. Use your own previous results as the comparison; different keyboards and passages can produce different speeds.
Make games useful
Racing rewards steady input, while Shadow Battle makes complete words matter. Return to ordinary typing practice when you want to inspect errors carefully. A game score is a learning aid rather than a qualification. Online rankings use server-validated race sessions and remain separate from unverified local practice scores.
